UH EAS Professional Master’s Programs: World-Class Petroleum Geoscience Education, Built Around Your Career

As an industry professional or recent graduate, obtain your M.S. in Geology or Geophysics without interrupting your career

The University of Houston’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers two fully accredited professional degrees: a Master of Science in Geology with Specialization in Petroleum Geology, and a Master of Science in Geophysics with Specialization in Petroleum Geophysics. Conferred by one of the leading energy research universities in the world and taught by highly experienced and academically recognized leaders in petroleum exploration and production research applications, these degrees are designed specifically for working geoscientists who want genuine graduate-level credentials without putting their careers on hold.

Courses are delivered on Friday afternoons and Saturdays in an accelerated monthly sequence — one subject at a time, allowing complete immersion before moving to the next. The program is completed in four continuous semesters, culminating in a capstone research project. Corporate sponsors and national oil companies may also arrange cohort programmes under an educational agreement with the University of Houston.

Coursework

Candidates complete 12 formal courses (36 credit hours) plus a capstone project (3 credit hours). Both specializations share common foundational courses before diverging into discipline-specific subjects.
