United Arab Emirates – unlocking the new sources of oil and gas

Exploration well Fennec 1 will be drilled targeting the hydrocarbon-rich Cretaceous Arabian Platform and Tertiary sediments of the foredeep domain.

Eni, RakGas and SNOC have started drilling their first exploration well Fennec 1 on Onshore Block 7, Ras al Khaimah, a key project in the UAE’s energy sector. This well aims to explore the hydrocarbon-rich Cretaceous Arabian Platform and the Tertiary potential within the foredeep domain.

The primary focus is the Cretaceous Arabian Platform, known for its extensive carbonate formations that have historically produced significant oil and gas reserves. The secondary focus is on the Tertiary potential, specifically in the foredeep domain. The foredeep domain is a subsiding basin adjacent to an uplifting orogenic belt, filled with sediments that can contain very large traps.

The exploration venture by Eni, RakGas, and SNOC on Onshore Block 7 is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the UAE’s hydrocarbon reserves and energy security. By targeting the Cretaceous Arabian Platform and Tertiary potential in the foredeep domain, the project seeks to unlock new sources of oil and gas, contributing to the region’s economic prosperity. Block 7 was awarded to the operating group in the 2021. Drilling campaigns nearby include a gas discovery at Oryx – 1 by P.K.Orlen (Ras Al Khaimah) and the Al Hadiba-1 gas field in Area A (Sharjah), which is also operated by Eni.
