Mubadala, with UK partner Harbour Energy, has recorded a multi-TCF gas discovery at Layaran 1 on the South Andaman Block, offshore northern Indonesia. Layaran 1 was drilled by the West Capella rig in 1207 m water in December 2023, reaching a TD of 4,208m. The well encountered over 230m gas in Oligocene sandstone reservoirs, and tested over 30 mmcfgd. The prospect is believed to have strong amplitude support on seismic. Mubadala have suggested over 6 TCF gas reserves in place at Layaran. The next well in the current campaign, Gayo 1, appears to be targeting both oil and gas.

Mubadala, bp, Harbour Energy and Repsol have built a material position in the Andaman Sea, offshore Aceh, with interests in Andaman I, II & III, and South Andaman. In Andaman II Harbour, bp and Mubadala successfully opened this new multi-TCF gas play with success at Timpan 1 in 2022. Andaman II was awarded to Premier (now Harbour) in 2018, on the back of the 2017 Bid Round. Harbour then joined South Andaman and Andaman I in 2020. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is looking for new investors to operate the Andaman III PSC after Repsol decided to begin the process of relinquishing the block in 2023. Repsol and Petronas drilled the unsuccessful Recong 1X well in December 2022.
The West Capella drillship has been contracted to drill six targets in the Andaman acreage. After a successful start with Layaran on Andaman South, Harbour (with bp and Mubadala) have spud the Gayo 1 well on a prospect to the southeast of Timpan on Andaman II and should be followed by the Halwa prospect to the northeast of Timpan. Harbour reported in 2023 that Gayo and Halwa may have shallower reservoir targets (Miocene) than those encountered at Timpan (Late Oligocene), Gayo has a planned TD of 3,650 m and a pre-drill estimate of 723 bcfg and 33.5 mmbo. The operating group also plan to appraise Timpan with Timpan 2 in Q1 2024. The mid-case resource for Timpan is 1 TCF, with a 6-12 TCF target volume across the entire play. On South Andaman Mubadala are also lining up the Parang Parang and Ramba prospects for this campaign.
