An onshore rig drilling an exploration well (Krem-1 EXP) in Mexico got into trouble on Thursday last week when it apparently hit a gas-bearing zone at a depth of around 1950 m MD. Initially, a fairly small fire was observed close to the rig, but a day later, when the crews had been unable to control the blowout, the entire rig was engulfed in flames.
The well, the first of four exploration wells planned by national oil company Pemex, was drilled by a team from SLB close to the village of Las Choapas in Veracruz in the south of Mexico. The plan was to explore Middle Cretaceous reservoirs at a depth of around 3400 m.
