GEO EXPRO is run by a small but dedicated team of people who all work together from different parts of the world to produce six magazines per year, in combination with publishing the magazine’s content online and on social media.

Our mission is to report on developments in the energy sector from a subsurface perspective, taking the role of observer and commentator on projects both in the oil and gas and renewable space. As such, we acknowledge the major importance oil and gas still plays with regards to energy security, whilst keeping a close eye on new developments in low-carbon subsurface solutions at the same time.

The Core Team

Ingvild Ryggen Carstens

Managing Director

As a student, Ingvild helped distribute the first-ever issue of the magazine and has had a close relationship with GEO EXPRO ever since. In 2022, she took on the role of managing director in which she oversees the strategic partnerships and the day-to-day aspects that come with running a small business. Ingvild has a dual bachelor degree in Marketing and Management from the University of Wyoming, and an MSc in Strategic Management and Multicultural Branding from Universität Innsbruck. In addition to her work for GEO EXPRO, she also organizes a series of conferences for the Norwegian geoscience community, oversees several other geoscience websites and the publication of the GEO magazine in Norway. Ingvild is based in Norway.

Henk Kombrink

Editor in Chief

Following a career as a geologist mainly working on regional projects in the greater North Sea region, Henk has been working with Ingvild and her team since 2020, culminating in taking on the editor role for GEO EXPRO in 2022. Reporting from his home in Aberdeen, still regarded as Europe’s energy capital, he is always on the hunt for good stories that relate to energy and subsurface. Henk has an MSc in Physical Geography and a PhD in sedimentary geology from Utrecht University. In addition to taking care of the content of the magazine, Henk also runs North Sea Core, a community interest company that distributes cores from oil and gas wells in the UK North Sea, and he is the editor for the Netherlands Journal of Geosciences.

Marzena Pyteraf

Editorial Assistant

Marzena graduated from the faculty of Geology at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Poland, in 2002. She then joined the oil industry, working on every step of the mudlogging career – getting messy with cuttings, monitoring drilling operations, and supervising mudlogging services. Several years on North Sea offshore rigs and British land rigs gave her a real taste of the industry and the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Following her operational experience, Marzena supported users of HRH’s geological software for a number of years, designing chart templates for clients around the world and fulfilling a wide range of technical queries.

Regular Contributors

Ayla Hernández

Geothermal Engineer

Ayla is specialized in shallow surface geothermal, but also works on deep geothermal and general hydrogeological topics. She is experienced in conducting studies and executing shallow geothermal projects of any size in the Greater Munich Area, Germany. As a groundwater modeller, she knows how to obtain and analyze groundwater and climate data and forecast the effects of groundwater projects on the environment and third-party uses.

David Rajmon

Petroleum systems analyst

David Rajmon, PhD, is a consultant in petroleum systems and exploration geology. He worked at the University of Houston and at Shell in Houston, TX. Currently, he consults for various clients worldwide from Czechia. In addition to his consulting work, he is a teacher, science popularizer, founder of the PSA group on LinkedIn (*2008), producer of the PSA webinars (2016-18), and most recently, a co-founder of the innovative community network livediff.com.

Ian Cross

Dealmaker

As a seasoned expert in the upstream oil and gas business, Ian Cross is a Managing Director with Moyes in London where he identifies opportunities for clients and partners. He is also the President of the South East Asia Petroleum Exploration Society (SEAPEX). Ian was appointed the South East Asia Regional Leader for the Frontier Energy Network in September 2023 and is a Convenor for the March 2024 Business & Exploration Opportunities Show (BEOS) jointly hosted by the AAPG and GESGB in London.

Juan Cottier

Development Geologist

Juan has over 30 years experience in developing and producing oil and gas fields, working not only for international operators, but also cofounding geotechnical-start-ups. An early adopter of the embryonic 3D geomodelling process, he has always been a strong advocate and a balanced critic of the methodology. His interest in the oil industry and its people is also reflected in the popular social-media geo-observations Juan runs under “A Geologist Ruins Everything”.

Mariël Reitsma

Geochemist

As HRH Geology’s principal geochemist, Mariël works on a wide variety of projects related to gas analysis in the drilling industry. For GEO EXPRO, she reports on developments in the new gas resource space when it comes to hydrogen and helium exploration. With a keen interest in the analytical side of things, she always looks behind the press release headlines to interpret statements from a geoscience perspective.

Molly Turko

Structural Geologist

A passionate geologist, Dr. Molly Turko has nearly 15 years of experience in the petroleum industry and is a subject matter expert in structural geology. She has worked for several independents in the U.S. including Chesapeake Energy and is currently full-time with Devon Energy. Her favourite role is teaching and leading field trips for Applied Stratigraphix and local geological societies. Molly is the President of AAPG’s Petroleum Structure and Geomechanics Division and is an associate editor for several leading geoscience journals.

Marcos Asensio

Geologist and illustrator

Marcos is a petroleum geologist with expertise in sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, applied through exploration and field developments across various Argentine and South American basins. He is also passionate about geology outreach, giving talks at universities and sharing content on his social media platforms. Following the successful completion of an MBA, he co-founded a marketing agency specialized in STEM where he serves as the Creative Director.

Peter Elliott

Explorationist

Since he started working offshore in the 1990’s, Peter has gained a mix of technical skills and commercial competence. With a strong background in scouting and large seismic spec programs, Peter and colleagues launched NVentures Ltd in 2013, producing high-quality scouting reports with detailed geological context. He also consults with oil company New Ventures departments in a business development role. Peter is an active member of several energy industry organisations and has served on committees with EAGE, GESGB and AAPG.

Rodney Garrard

Geologist

Rodney is a geologist with over 23 years of subsurface experience. He worked extensively in the upstream E&P industry for 18 years across five continents before pivoting into nuclear waste disposal in 2018 in Switzerland. Following the completion of the site selection process for geological storage of nuclear waste, Rodney decided to make use of his experience and he joined the global energy insurance.

Ronny Setså

Editor and Geologist

Based in Norway, Ronny is the editor for the GEO magazine and the GEO365 and geoforskning websites. In these roles, he reports on developments covering most aspects of the Norwegian G&G sector. This includes the deep sea minerals space, and with Norway one of the countries having a leading role in this realm, he is in a perfect position to closely follow developments and report on these for the GEO EXPRO magazine.
