A fun quiz to test your basic knowledge of oil and gas
Rules and stuff
There aren’t any! Have a go, submit your answers, check your score. Don’t like the result? Have another go. Of course if you want to share your answer with a friend or colleague you can, by letting them see your score page, and you can encourage them to have a go by sharing this page with them.
Good luck and don’t worry if you don’t get them all right, we only got a few correct and we saw the answers before hand!
Remember it’s just for fun but if you google the answers then you are only cheating yourself!

Oil consumption per USA citizen per day:
Oil consumption per day (2015) = 19.4 million barrels (Per EIA)
Number of barrels per ton = circa 7.3
Number of pounds per ton = 2,240
USA population = 320 million
Consumption per USA citizen per day = ((19.4m / 7.3) * 2,240) / 320m = 18.6 lbs
Gas consumption per USA citizen per day:
Consumption 2015 year = 27,306.285 Tcf (per EIA)
Consumption per day 2015 = 27,306.285 / 365 = 74.8 Tcfg
Number of Mcf per barrel = 5.5
Consumption in Barrel of oil equivalent per day = 74,811,740 / 5.5 = 13.6 MM
Consumption per USA citizen per day = ((13.6 / 7.3) * 2,240) / 320 mill = 13 lbs
Total oil & gas consumption per USA citizen per day 31.6 lbs
Average weight of American:
Women = 151 lbs (The Average American by Kevin O’Keefe)
Men = 164 lbs (The Average American by Kevin O’Keefe)
Children = say half for 1/5th of the population
Average weight of a USA citizen = ((151 + 164) / 2) – (1/5th / 2) = 140lbs
Proportion of oil & gas consumed by each USA citizen per day = 31.6/140 (circa) 22.5 %
5.
Barrels per ton of oil 7.3
Litres per barrel of oil 160.0
Calories per ton of oil 10,000,000
Calories per litre = 10,000,000 / (7.3 * 160.0) = 8,561.6
Calories average output per man in 24 hrs = 1,817 (Energy Balances in Man by R. Passmore, Dept., of Physiology, Edinburgh University)
Man working weeks equivalent = (8,561.6/1817) * (24 / 37.5) = 3.0 days
6.
Litres consumed per American per day = ((19.4 MM + 13.6 MM) / 320 mill) * 160 = 16.5
Man working days equivalent = 16.5 * 3.0 * 5 = 247.5
