Kveikje a rolling success

Equinor and partners prove between 28 and 48 MMboe in an Eocene injectite reservoir in the North of Troll area.

Today, Longboat Energy issued a press release stating that the Kveikje well (35/10-8S) has resulted in the discovery of between 28 and 48 MMboe of oil resources in an Eocene injectite reservoir.

As the well was hoped to confirm around 36 MMboe, the result of this drilling campaign has the potential to exceed expectations.

Having been drilled in PL293B by Equinor (51%), the discovery has demonstrated excellent reservoir quality and being close to existing infrastructure there is scope for a simple development through multiple export options. Partners in the well are DNO (29%), Idemitsu (10%) and Longboat (10%).

According to the Longboat press release, the top of the Kveikje Main reservoir was encountered close to prognosis at a vertical depth of 1,757 m below sea level with 18.4 metres of net sand in a 24 m oil-filled gross interval with porosities in the order of 30 percent.

The top of the Kveikje Hordaland reservoir was also encountered close to prognosis at a vertical depth of 1,691 m below sea level with 2.7 m of net sand in a 4 m gas-filled gross interval with porosities in the order of 31 percent. It is believed that the gas column in the Hordaland reservoir is in communication with the oil accumulation in Kveikje Main.

Neither the gas-oil contact nor oil-water contact were penetrated in Kveikje and fluid contacts have been estimated using pressure data from the well and aquifer pressure data from nearby wells.

Indications of sand with hydrocarbons were also encountered in the deeper Palaeocene Rokke and in the Cretaceous N’Roll prospects. Rokke was encountered at a vertical depth of 1,877 m below sea level and penetrated around 3 m of sand. N’Roll was encountered at a vertical depth of 1,997 m below sea level and penetrated multiple sand stringers.

However, due to operational concerns these deeper targets were not fully evaluated.
