In separate press releases, PGS announced the acquisition of seismic surveys in both the UK and Norwegian sectors this year. Yesterday, the company announced the award of the Endurance seismic acquisition project in the UK Southern North Sea, and today it was released that the Northern Lights site to the southwest of the Troll field will also be surveyed this year.
It is a clear sign of the ramping up of activities to seriously extend carbon storage activities in the North Sea.
Northern Nights
The Northern Lights project aims to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2024. The main reservoir is the Lower Jurassic Johansen Fm at around 2,600 m depth in the area to the southwest of Troll. Plans exist to increase the capacity to 5 million tonnes per year through additional phases of development and an increasing customer base.
Endurance
The Endurance carbon storage site is a Triassic aquifer in the UK Southern North Sea in which the up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 captured from the industrial Humber cluster will be stored by the mid 2020’s.
Both the Endurance and Northern Lights projects had a well drilled specifically for CCS purposes.
