The reports from the UN Climate Panel clearly state that consumption of fossil fuels and the CO2 emissions it entails are creating serious and global climate change. The world must therefore move with rapid steps away from coal, oil and gas and towards renewable energy sources.
This has caused concern among geologists, as the oil and gas industry has traditionally been among their most important industry for jobs. Dag Helland-Hansen from Electromagnetic Geoservices ASA (EMGS) can tell that geoscientific knowledge is far from useless in the green shift, and that interesting and important jobs are on the rise.
On April 7, Helland-Hansen will be presenting at the DIGEX 2022 conference, and will give a talk about three different industries where geoscientific knowledge is essential:
- Exploration and extraction of deep-sea minerals. The deposits in the deep sea can contribute metals that the green shift requires.
- Offshore wind. Large and small wind farms are currently being built and are planned to be built out at sea. In this process, it is not only wind that must be measured and understood, but mapping and geotechnical investigations of the seabed are also required to ensure sound and economical development of the enormous structures.
- Geothermal energy. In order to be able to use this renewable energy source in an efficient way, a good understanding of heat capacity, heat flows and liquid circulation in the subsurface is required
“And then we are not even touching in on CO2 storage and in the future exploration and development of hydrogen plants for which a similar story as above can be made!”
DIGEX 2022
DIGEX is the conference on digitalization for the geoscience community and surrounding industries. At the conference, we look at how digital technology is enabling the oil & gas industry to change the way geoscientists work, across teams, companies and license partners.
At the conference, we look at concrete examples of how companies are embracing the possibilities in digitalization and how they are changing their workflows and approaches to the entire value chain from a subsurface perspective.
Location: Clarion Hotel Air, Stavanger, Norway
Dates: 5 – 7 April 2022
