Mixed results for DNO in Southern North Sea drilling campaign

Paleocene target was found oil bearing but classified as minor discovery.

The well (2/5-15), drilled just north of the Tor Southeast Chalk oil discovery, targeted the Gomez prospect and proved a 23 m oil column in Paleocene Intra-Lista and Våle Formation sandstones of poor to moderate quality.

The oil water contact was not established in the well and there are uncertainties with regards to the mobility of the oil. This must come as an unwelcome surprise to both operator DNO and partner Aker BP (15%), the more so because Aker BP already experienced oil mobility issues with their recent appraisal well on the Liatårnet discovery.

Based on the findings, a further assessment of the results is needed to arrive at a recoverable resources estimate.

The Southeast Tor field was discovered in the early days of North Sea exploration and contains about 24 MMboe of mainly oil in the Chalk. It has never been developed though, which is probably because of the challenging reservoir. An example of this is well 2/5-8, which was drilled in between the first two wells on the discovery. In contrast to finding an oil column, the well only proved some oil shows along fault planes and was declared dry with shows.

Ommadawn

The Gomez well followed the recent completion of the OMV-operated Ommadawn drilling campaign (1/3-13), which targeted the Chalk but found the Paleocene oil bearing in two thin sandstones of the Forties and Andrew sandstones instead. According to Francis Chevalier, head of exploration at OMV, further work is required as to how the sands found in 1/3-13 correlate to the ones found in previous wells (1/3-11 and 11T2). This must ultimately result to a follow-up appraisal strategy, but given the lack of pressure points in the wells there are quite some uncertainties remaining.
