As part of the Aberdeen Energy Talk series, PhD student Thomas Houghton from Aberdeen University discusses his work on the Mid North Sea High area of the UK offshore. Using the latest high-spec 3D seismic data acquired in recent years by TGS, he shows that the Plattendolomite carbonate platform in his study area forms an intricate network of connected ridges and associated deeper troughs, similar to a honeycomb structure.
Thomas suggests that the interplay of subsidence, sea-water composition and pre-extisting topography inherited from Carboniferous times form key ingredients to explain what he sees in the seismic. These observations can form an important key to highlight further exploration potential in the Hauptdolomite play just beneath the Plattendolomite.
