From the 8th June this year, TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands hosts a completely revamped Stratigraphic Nomenclature, which combines two previously separate “deep” and “shallow” versions.
Geert-Jan Vis, one of the main contributors of the project explains: “Nowadays people go online to search for stratigraphic information and we had to offer something that meets this demand. We put together a web portal that is user friendly, completely bilingual and also offers accessible information for non-specialists.”
Stratigraphic information can now be accessed and compared from different angles of investigation. For instance, the user can search for all Members or Formations having the same depositional environment, age or are part of the same Group.
“The background information available for all Groups, Formations and Members has also been updated, with the inclusion of distribution maps and core pictures as two major advances with respect to the older versions,” Vis added.
Work on this project has not finished though, and more functionalities are going to be added in the months to come. For instance, type wells to illustrate the log response of a certain unit will all be updated, as well as the stratigraphic diagrams offering an overview of the spatial and chronological context of all units.
