After the success of Warka, will ConocoPhillips strike again in the Norwegian Sea?

6507/5-10S lies on trend with the Shrek discovery made in 2019, so a complicated geological setting may be expected.

Being the first well drilled in production licence 891, well 6507/5-10S is operated by ConocoPhillips and partnered by Pandion Energy at 20%.

The well is located in the Revfallet Fault Complex, with immediately to the east the Sør High.

The well closest to 6507/5-10S is 6507/5-7, drilled in 2014 by E.ON onto the Sør High. Targeting the Terne prospect, the primary objective of this well was to prove oil in the Middle Jurassic Garn Formation with the Ile, Tilje and Åre formations being secondary targets. Although all four formations proved to have good quality reservoirs, no hydrocarbons were found. In this area of the Sør High, the Miocene directly overlies the Upper Jurassic.

Only five kilometres to the west of 6507/5-10S lies the Ærfugl field, which was discovered in 2000 and currently produces as an extended well test since 2013 whilst the field is further developed. Operated by Aker BP, Ærfugl mainly produces gas that is piped onshore whilst the oil finds its way to the nearby Skarv FPSO. The reservoir of Ærfugl consists of the Upper Cretaceous Lysing Formation.

As stated above, 6507/5-10S lies on trend with the Shrek discovery, made by PGNiG last year. The reservoirs of Shrek sit in the Middle and Lower Jurassic, in an area that is structurally complex due to the many fault segments within the Revfallet Fault Complex. This caused difficulties in correlating horizons on seismic as well as posed challenges to depth conversion, as described in this article.

Without more information at hand as to what the target of the current well is, based on the setting described above it is expected that the target is similar to the Middle and Lower Jurassic sandstones as found in Shrek. As it is likely that the Cretaceous and hence the Lysing Formation are present too, with a pinch out probably taking place directly to the east against the Sør High, this may be a secondary target of the well.
