Eos CCS well confirms CO2 storage potential

Excellent reservoir and seal were proven in the exploration well.

The exploration well 31/5-7 (EOS) in EL 001 encountered a total of 173 metres of water-wet sandstone in the Aurora prospect, with good to very good reservoir quality in the Cook and Johansen Formation, according to a press release from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD). A 75 m thick sealing seal from the Lower Drake Formation was also proven.

Eva Halland, coordinator the NPDs CO2 storage project says in the press release that “It’s always exciting when an exploration well is drilled. That was also the case here, where we not only hoped to prove a water-filled reservoir, but a reservoir that would be well suited for injection and storage of CO2. The well absolutely seems to have done the job, and it is an important premise in the Norwegian full-scale project”.

The operator of the well, Equinor, confirms this in their press release.

According to Geir Tungesvik, Equinor’s senior vice president for project development, “This is an important milestone in realising the possibility of a CO₂ storage on the Norwegian continental shelf”.

This exploration is part of the Northern Lights project with partners Shell and Total, if sanctioned, the project will use the reservoir proven by the EOS well for injection and storage of CO₂.

The well 31/5-7 (Eos) will be presented at the “NCS Exploration – Recent discoveries” conference in May 12-13 at Scandic fornebu in Oslo.
